Ellon's actions
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.

Ellon Ruschell 7/31/2022 6:52 AMThat’s a wrap! I love plastic free july because it creates great new habits and I can feel good about the habits I started previous years! -
Ellon Ruschell 7/30/2022 7:11 AMA few more one time actions to go (even after I went back and added more)! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Ellon Ruschell 7/30/2022 7:10 AMThis is a little hard for me right now because of my Invisalign. I have to brush my teeth whenever I eat. So that can be a bit more awkward using a place’s bathroom if you don’t purchase items from them. -
Ellon Ruschell 7/29/2022 2:01 PMFinishing strong! Go md zoo! -
Ellon Ruschell 7/28/2022 1:18 PMI was nervous for a bit but *crosses fingers* it seems like MD Zoo got this in the bag! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Ellon Ruschell 7/28/2022 1:18 PMI admit, I had to do a bit of research to answer this question and I learned that natural fibers wick away moisture, are biodegradable, and are lightweight (plus other benefits). Sounds good to me! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Ellon Ruschell 7/26/2022 7:41 AMSometimes it's time consuming to refill the travel sized containers but in the long run it's actually easier for me because I then get a full container every time.-
Ellen Bronson 7/26/2022 6:25 PMI have gotten used to a small bar soap for travel. My sister-in-law got me a groovy breathable but waterproof bag for the soap that makes it super easy. Using it right now on a trip!

REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Ellon Ruschell 7/26/2022 7:40 AMWe occasionally buy toys for our cats but they prefer playing with things around the house like twist ties and boxes! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Ellon Ruschell 7/26/2022 7:40 AMWe tend to not buy lots of stuff for our cats. They use human stuff haha. Bowls that we used to have in our apartment but don't use anymore are now cat bowls. -
Ellon Ruschell 7/26/2022 7:39 AMAdded a few more one-time actions to give our team a boost :)
