When I go to the grocery store now, I am much more aware of how much plastic packaging there is -- even when it doesn't seem necessary. Does one cucumber really need to be in plastic wrap? If I buy a couple of peaches or apples or pears, do I really need to put them in a plastic bag?

The actions that I chose are around things that I do every day -- cooking and eating.

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

I save plastic containers from cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc. and use them over and over as storage containers for leftovers.

It's been a real eye-opener to go to the grocery store and see how much unnecessary plastic packaging is out there.

I keep taking things and putting them back on the shelf because I feel guilty when I think about how much plastic it contains.  People must think I'm crazy in the store.

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I was thrilled to learn today that Wegman's is eliminating single-use plastic bags from its stores. This is fabulous news and I hope other grocery stores do the same.

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

I had lunch yesterday at La Food Marketa at Quarry Lake. I was happy to see that both my water glass and my ice tea glass were served with straws that were not made out of plastic.

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

Single use plastic packaging is much more prevalent than I thought it was. Even things that don't need to be in plastic are wrapped in plastic.

I should get minus points for this past weekend. We went to several July 4th events and had to take food in disposable packaging and we ate strawberries and blueberries that came in non-recyclable plastic containers. We used plastic utensils that I would normally bring home and wash and re-use, but this time they ended up in the garbage can.
