Andrea's actions
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 60 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Andrea Schlunk 7/04/2022 11:01 AMThe amount of plastic is staggering sometimes, and often I wonder what function it serves--aside from holding a slight vacuum seal and allowing customers to look at the product they're buying. There are times I understand it, but when parts of a meal are wrapped in nesting-doll like containers of plastic, it's just too much. -
Andrea Schlunk 7/04/2022 10:23 AMAn early stumble when I overslept...grabbing food to-go has a definite downside when it's all wrapped up in plastic. Another reason to plan one step ahead! -

Andrea Schlunk 6/17/2022 9:05 AMI'm excited for another plastic-free month! Here's to trying new things and sticking to the old habits!
