REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Cook a Plastic Free MealDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Rose Slick 7/18/2022 8:30 AMI'm finding this one really difficult! I'm often about 80% of the way there but then have ne or two ingredients that come in plastic. For example, I eat a lot of salads, and have been able to find lettuce, other veggies, and dressing not wrapped in plastic- but if I want to add some protein with nuts or seeds, those almost always come in plastic, or at least the stuff already in my cupboard is. One of the things that still hasn't come back to the extent I want it to since the pandemic is items purchased in bulk- I am planning to reach out to grocery stores in my area to encourage them to increase their selection of bulk items, hopefully heightening my ability to cook plastic free meals in the future!-
Jaime Webster 7/23/2022 7:42 AMSprouts & MOM's have returned all their bulk bin options, but our Teeter completely removed the bulk bins and replaced the area with shelves full of similar items in plastic containers. Boo. Wegman's used to have great bulk bins, but I haven't been to one in awhile. My biggest difficulty is meat & cheese, esp pre-packaged. Our deli used to let me use my own container but that quickly went away. I also used to be able to find more stores that sold fresh loaves of un-packaged bread and supplied paper bags to put them in (or I could find a small paper bag in the muffin section or checkout area), but majority of stores now bag even their store-baked breads in plastic right away. The lack of options post-Covid is frustrating.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Swap the SnacksHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Rose Slick 7/16/2022 8:36 AMIt’s interesting because I would imagine most people aim to do this switch for the health benefits rather than thinking about the plastic reduction. It’s great that you get both at the same time- and the cost is usually cheaper with fresh produce snacks too. -
Rose Slick 7/06/2022 5:05 AMLeaving for a trip today and I'm putting more focus than usual into making sure I bring my reusable cutlery, straw, etc. Airports really make you use heaps of plastic, hopefully I can avoid most of it! -
Rose Slick 7/03/2022 11:11 AMAlready, this challenge has stopped me from going to Starbucks without my reusable mug. The competition mindset is real!-
Patricia Jonas 7/03/2022 1:32 PMAlso noting the irony of having Starbucks a participant in this challenge. -

Rose Slick 6/23/2022 5:10 AMI'm really looking forward to the challenge this year. The past two years with covid and all the associated plastic, my own person PFJ feel a little stunted. Ready to get after it and make some new habits!
