Travel Eating

If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.

I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.

Go Strawless

I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

Food

Minimize Packaging

I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.

Choose Reusable Food Storage

I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

Switch to Loose Leaf Tea

Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

The end of the month signifies the beginning of regular changes to plastic use, starting with laundry.  No more big plastic bottles.  Need to cut back on plastic soda bottles, too.

Made sun iced tea with some of my tea bags as I move toward loose tea use.  Also using the last of my liquid laundry soap!

Recycling at home today - more Amazon boxes and lots of cat food tins!

While I still order fast food for convenience, I have prepared more meals from scratch while my daughter bakes.  We’re avoiding plastics and plan to continue going forward.

Running to the finish line and put out only 2 bags of trash!  Recycling is a different story.  Did you know that photo paper is not recyclable?  Balto County doesn’t accept shredded paper either - it must gum up the machines!

Ordering laundry detergent sheets so I can skip plastic bottles.  Working to keep plastic from my normal purchases.  My grandfather was a butcher, and I still have a huge roll of butcher paper with cutter to use when stamping cards.

Had fast food in cardboard boxes today - no plastic bags or straws.  Good habits.

I bought some stuff today with zero plastic packaging - that’s a first!  It’s so hard to find non-plastic stuff.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I started to refuse a straw at the Greene Turtle recently, but my waiter reminded me that they were paper!  Good to know.  I also own two sets of reusable straws.  I haven’t seen a huge shift away from offering straws at drive thru restaurants.

I’m in the middle of my waste audit and completed my plastic use audit.  There’s so much more work to be done.  Has anyone use those laundry strips instead of liquid detergent?  What works the best?
