What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

I realized a lot of waste is created with purchases of fruits and vegetables, which is annoying. Why do these items come in plastic containers from certain places - like Costco.
Buying from local, independant grocers helps to reduce this waste but the cost increases for my family.
