Sea Turtle Inc.

"I am an incoming college student this fall with an intended major of Marine Science. I spent 7 1/2 months last year working with sea turtles. I plan to work in Marine Conservation in the future. Reducing plastic pollution has become a central focus for me over the past few years. I am so excited to be part of the Sea Turtle Inc. team!"

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

It is hard to say what concerns me the most but I realize that I am very concerned about the oceans (plastic pollution and warming oceans). If the oceans keep getting warmer and coastlines keep inching further and further inland each year, theoretically we could be fully ocean eventually with no land at all. As we know, already there are islands like Tuvalu in the Pacific that are getting smaller and smaller each year. I am also very concerned about the ocean creatures. Some of these creatures have been around for hundreds of millions of years and it saddens and angers me to know that they are going extinct every day. So I guess what concerns me the most would be our reliance and use of fossil fuels. Plastics and global warming in particular are very concerning to me.

What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Sydney Taft Cole's avatar
Sydney Taft Cole 7/31/2022 7:11 PM
Purchasing clothing made from natural fibers is greatly beneficial to marine animals especially small ones. For example, hatchling sea turtles feed mostly on plankton in their first few weeks of life. Nanoplastics, caused by synthetic clothing fibers and other tiny synthetic plastic particles can be eaten by these tiny creatures and lead to starvation and other problems. Also, when fish eat these nanoplastics, then they can make their way into the human food chain when humans consume seafood. Natural fibers biodegrade and do not cause these kinds of problems.

Fleece is something that I really enjoy and will be a hard one for me to give up. I am going to seek out alternatives whenever possible though for sweaters and other clothing.

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Sydney Taft Cole's avatar

There are so many benefits to this! For one thing, bar soap/shampoo lasts longer and is smaller and easier for transportation. I have been doing some shopping before leaving for college and I have decided that I will buy bar shampoo and bar soap instead of bottles. I have a friend who has already made this switch and that inspired me to do the same. Also, I think bar soap/shampoo is cheaper than getting it in a bottle, which is always a plus!

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Sydney Taft Cole's avatar

I find that when I pick up litter, I notice people around me start doing it too. I love doing these sorts of actions because it encourages others without even having to try to talk them into something that they may not be accustomed to doing. Yesterday I was at a beach with my parents and I began picking up pieces of trash. Then I noticed that my dad began to pick up some too! It felt very good and it can be a community building activity too since we all want to see cleaner beaches and towns.

What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

    Sydney Taft Cole's avatar

I learned that plastic production releases harmful chemicals into the air, chemicals that are known to cause cancer and other serious health conditions. Also, during plastic production, many tiny plastic beads are made and in some instances spill into waterways and can endanger seabirds and other animals. I am very fortunate to live in an area with clean air and water that is almost completely unspoiled by plastic pollution or plastic production.

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

Yesterday I traveled out of state for a mini vacation and I am about to embark on a road trip from Vermont to Florida. Yesterday we brought some of our meals, ate in a restaurant one time, and brought our own take out containers to a hot food bar. That required a little more planning, but once you get the hang of it, it is not a difficult thing to do. I am realizing that it is possible to bring your own take out container and this really does have an impact in reducing waste. It changed my travel experience for the better because I felt really good that I did not take any single use plastics and did not contribute to plastic pollution during that trip.

Yesterday, I got food from the hot bar at Whole Foods. I brought and used my own container and it worked out! The person at the cash register was surprised but went along with it. Success!

Take-out is tricky... Here in Vermont, many places give compostable take-out containers but not everywhere. I am traveling to New Hampshire tomorrow and may be getting take-out. I set a goal for myself for the month that I would not get take out at all since it sometimes comes in plastic and regardless, it is contributing to the waste stream but tomorrow we are meeting some family friends who we haven't seen in three years so I might make an exception to get take-out with them. I am going to bring my own container to see if the restaurant will give me the food in that. I wish reusable take-out containers were more widely accepted at restaurants.

Me too! When I worked in A restaurant in the past it killed me that we used what was cheapest which unfortunately was plastic and styrofoam!

Does anyone have any tips for natural, plastic free laundry detergent? I'm about to start college and would love a plastic free option. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the suggestion, Kyra! I think concentrate is a great idea as it lasts longer and can have less packaging. Right now I am using a concentrated toothpaste that is packaged in plastic, but is said to last 3 times longer than a regular tube of toothpaste. I don't go to Target very often but I'm trilled to hear that they are beginning to carry more concentrates and refillable bottles. That is awesome!! I'll have to take a look at the stores around my college and see which ones I will be able to get to (I don't have a car). Thanks so much!!

It's not totally plastic free, but Target sells laundry concentrate bottles now. They're smaller bottles (so less plastic if nothing else) and less product with the same power as a normal bottle of detergent, and it's supposed to dispense the exact amount you need for a load of laundry. I think the brand has recyclable bottles (their dish soap certainly does), and I cannot remember the brand for the life of me, but it might be something like Everspring/Evergreen or Seventh Generation? It's probably on the shelves at all Targets, and I know the bottles are clear if that helps.
I just picked up one myself and haven't used it open yet, so I can't speak to how well it works, but I know it can be super challenging to find options depending on what is close to you in college (especially if you don't have a car), not to mention the typically tight college budget. I think it's supposed to be a naturally based detergent too, since the dish soap I got from them is mostly natural and biodegradable. I thought I heard you can make your own laundry detergent from Borax and other ingredients, but I have never tried it, can't speak to the effectiveness, and know that will be a time consumer that college doesn't always allow for.
Target has started rolling out more sustainable and natural cleaning supplies, though sadly, a lot of them are still packaged in plastic, so if you happen to have one near your college and you don't have a better option that offers refillable options (I know my college didn't!), that might be a decent place to start. I've seen a lot more concentrates and refillable bottles on their shelves lately, which is promising. If I can find the laundry brand name, I'll try to add it on to this thread. Good luck with your search and with college! :)
