    Lifestyle
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

By making your own cleaners, you are in control of the ingredients and the concentration.  I make my own carpet deodorizer with baking soda and vary the scent by using different essential oils! The ingredients you can use are simple, less expensive and usually less toxic than ingredients found in purchased cleaning products.

I buy 13# bag of baking soda at Costco (less than $10) then place about a cup of baking soda into glass shaker (like the ones at pizza places for cheese/red pepper) and add about 15 drops of your preferred essential oil(s). I use lavender because it  is calming and anti-bacterial, but you can also use lemon grass and orange to give it that "citrus" smell or experiment with other scents you like.  Again, you are in control :-)

Thank you for the info, Denise!  I have some CRV items and I used their site and found a recycle center that is very close to my house.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets
How could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?

I tend to make a lot of pup treats using oatmeal because it's inexpensive and a healthy snack for them.  I don't know if they appreciate the homemade snacks more than store bought ones, but it makes ME feel good!  I also make some frozen yogurt w/fruit treats using silicone ice trays in fun paw and bone shapes. Again, probably  more for my amusement than theirs :-)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

It's hard to break the cycle of using plastic bags for "everything". I am trying to be more mindful to store items in reusable containers rather than plastic bags.  It's an effort though!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Denise Tamura's avatar
    Denise Tamura 7/11/2022 10:50 AM
I have been making my own cleaning products for several years. There are so many uses for baking soda and vinegar! Buying a big bag of baking soda at Costco saves countless plastic, and even cardboard, containers while keeping things clean! Same for vinegar - I buy by the gallon!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

I bring reusable bags when I go grocery shopping and have recently purchased reusable produce bags which are very nice! I have been practicing this for years so it hasn't been difficult.  When I forget my bags, I don't have them use plastic bags and will bag the items when I get to my car!

I ordered reusable (and machine washable!) produce bags.  I have always wanted to do this, but this challenge encouraged me to follow through. I found a 15 pack with 3 different sizes for $12.00.
