Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

A lot of people do not think about how a product will be disposed of when they are done using it. Many don't know how to dispose of things properly or try to throw out things that can still be used by other people.

Plastic impacts the environment at every step of the process. From production using petroleum products, to micro-plastics in almost everything.

I learned that a lot of my waste comes from product packaging. Most of my waste is compost and recyclable, which is good.

I was pleasantly surprised about how much of an impact the changes to plastic free products Ive made decreased my waste overtime.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

I learned that bioplastics are the exact same as normal plastics just made from biomass instead of petroleum.  Bioplastics are not accepted in my area unfortunately.

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I can buy toothpaste in recyclable aluminum and tell people about the plastic free options available. I can also contact companies to reduce their plastic packaging.
