Anthony 's actions
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Family
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Preserve
Instead of buying something in plastic, buy it in bulk or grow it. Then, preserve it by canning, freezing, or drying.
Lifestyle
Wait to Buy
Before buying that item you think you need, wait 48 hours. Do you actually need it? Is there something you already have that can serve the same purpose?
Lifestyle
Second Hand Shopping
Looking for something you need? Check your local thrift store or second hand store first. You can also check Facebook marketplace, eBay or other online second hand stores. Did you know you can buy used on Amazon?
Community
Trade Based economy
Join your local buy nothing group, swap group, or other local trade based economy group. Don't have one? Make one with friends or family.
Food
Bring your own Container
When eating out, bring your own container for left overs. At the end of the meal, instead of asking for a to-go container that is probably trash, grab for your reusable one! For our family, we store one in our backpack that we take with us when we go out.
Food
Beyond Plastics-Vegan Meals
Cook a vegan meal. Eating less meat and dairy not only has health benefits, but environmental benefits. Meat and Dairy industries are huge contributor to green house gases, water usage, land usage, and deforestation? Also most of agriculture is actually used to feed animals for the meat and dairy industry! Do the research and cook a animal free meal!
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Lifestyle
Proper Bioplastic Disposal
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 1 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.

Anthony Waters 7/20/2022 10:57 PMDid a waste audit with Katie today, interesting to see our accumulated waste and take a look at a few heavy hitters! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Anthony Waters 7/18/2022 8:46 PMI stopped using aluminum deodorant years ago. What is hard to do is find a deodorant that works well without it. It is even more difficult to find one that comes in compostable housing. That said, there appears to be a growing market and when my current deodorant stick is used up I'll definitely.ake the switch -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Anthony Waters 7/18/2022 8:44 PMDefinitely just a way to sell more items. Safety razors work well and can get an extremely close shave. It's nice to only replace blades once in awhile-
Katarina Waters 7/19/2022 10:20 PMSo you going to get one? Twinning!

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Support a Sharing EconomyWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Anthony Waters 7/18/2022 8:43 PMIt's great to be a member to save things from going to the second hand store or the dump. There is always uncertainty when donating whether the item will be used. It's great knowing what I have is truly providing someone else value -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Proper Bioplastic DisposalWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Anthony Waters 7/18/2022 8:36 PMOn a micro level, it is easy to assume our "one action" doesn't have a global impact. How does my choice impact someone across the world? We are all tied together by our collective inaction. The more people act and the more they care, the larger an impact we have. By being leaders in our social circle, we can show others that living sustainably is attainable. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to care a little bit to make one better choice a day -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Anthony Waters 7/18/2022 8:34 PMThe most waste comes from kitchen items. It is soo difficult to buy food without an unnecessarily large amount of packaging. There are such limited locations that allow for a Zero waste bulk buying experience and when they do, options are relatively limited. -
Anthony Waters 7/14/2022 9:32 PMDaily reminders to take small steps. 1% better each day makes a lot of progress in the long run! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood PreserveHow might preserve help the environment and cut back on plastic consumption? How do you see yourself applying this?
Anthony Waters 7/14/2022 9:27 PMPlastics are great at keeping items fresh. Using preservation techniques like freezing/canning is relatively easy and can bring out a nice flavor in the foods. Buying in bulk can be difficult due to limited stores allowing it, but it is cool to bring home items in our own containers rather than a billion plastic ones
