Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!

Community
Trade Based economy
Join your local buy nothing group, swap group, or other local trade based economy group. Don't have one? Make one with friends or family.
Food
Bring your own Container
When eating out, bring your own container for left overs. At the end of the meal, instead of asking for a to-go container that is probably trash, grab for your reusable one! For our family, we store one in our backpack that we take with us when we go out.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 15 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

Proper Bioplastic Disposal
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 1 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 1 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Personal Care

Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Raise Money For a NonprofitWhat are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?
Katarina Waters 7/29/2022 10:36 PMIt really seems like the main area of Seattle and Tacoma are doing a few things. Then there are many areas around the San Juans. However, I didn't find many nonprofits in our area focused on sustainablity. This is sad because I viewed our area as very progressive especially in sustainability. -
Katarina Waters 7/27/2022 10:36 PMI love our CSA! Today they had a lot more local and a lot more waste! No bags wasted and less labels (why do they label every single apple anyways?)
I also love that they have a u-pick herb, greens, and flowers area! -
Katarina Waters 7/26/2022 11:38 PMI have loved seeing what other people are doing and where they are at on their journey! -
Katarina Waters 7/25/2022 11:24 PMAck! This zero waste meal gets me every time! There is always one thing in a meal that has plastic. Even though we eat from our garden, bulk shop, make our own Oatmilk and other items... Always one thing 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ -
Katarina Waters 7/24/2022 10:28 PMOne week left!! Keep up the great work! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Learn about Environmental JusticeWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Katarina Waters 7/23/2022 10:18 PMIt should be no surprise that certain populations are disproportionately affected more! It is so frustrating and unethical! Another example is in the documentaries plastic island and the plastic problem. -
Katarina Waters 7/20/2022 11:10 PMCheck out your individual impact and the team impact! It is so awesome to see!!
Today it was really nice to step back and celebrate how far we.have come!. It is very cool that we are in the middle of summer with things to do, people visiting, on the go, and lots of opportunities for trash. Yet we are the lowest waste we have ever been at!!
