Sean's actions
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 3 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and tupperware-like containers in my children's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Sean Yetter 7/06/2022 9:30 AMThis is an action that will be very easy to maintain and keep in my life. It also makes it much easier to refill travel toiletries with my existing bathroom supply rather than buy new ones each time wasting the plastic. -
Sean Yetter 7/06/2022 9:22 AMI would say the challenge is going very well so far. I have gotten into a good habit of bringing reusable bags to the grocery store. This weekend having been the Fourth of July would have been an easy time to fall back into wasteful habits, but it was easy and rewarding to be conscientious of my environmental choices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Sean Yetter 7/06/2022 9:20 AMPerforming this task helped both eliminate plastic waste and make my food choices healthier. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Sean Yetter 7/01/2022 9:38 AMThis challenge was difficult in that I had to make a conscientious effort to cut out plastic bags, planning my grocery store trip ahead of time and bringing reusable bags. What made this easy, however, was getting into the routine. I grab the bags with my keys, so easy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Sean Yetter 7/01/2022 9:36 AMWith recycling also comes reusing. Many single-use plastics do not get that dirty and can be properly cleaned and reused. This allows us to decrease the number of disposables we go through while eating. -
Sean Yetter 7/01/2022 9:33 AMThis ecochallenge has really made me reevaluate the way I employ reusable and nonreusable materials in my every day life. By packing my lunch in a reusable container and a reusable bag, I avoid having to add to landfills and polluting even more. I feel like this consideration has greatly decreased the carbon footprint I am leaving behind.
