I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Amanda Zaino 7/28/2022 11:06 AMNot an immediate change, but I have noticed which people in my life see my posts (I have posted about sustainability on my IG story) and I know and trust a lot of these people to make the right decisions when it comes to being eco-friendly. Even just the exposure helps, it can help push people in the right direction if they aren't already being sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Amanda Zaino 7/26/2022 11:53 AMWhat concerns me the most is the amount of people who disregard climate change and don't see the changes that are happening constantly to our planet because of it. Also since a lot of people don't see how individual actions are able to collectively help when hundreds and thousands decide to do those same actions, such as recycling the correct materials, or turning the faucet off when you're brushing your teeth. Globally it's a bit harder when it's giant corporations responsible for the speeding up of climate change, but if as many people come together as possible, there is always hope for good to come. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Amanda Zaino 7/26/2022 11:49 AMI found out it was much higher than expected, I am hoping by the end of July to be able to cut the weekly used plastic items in half (minimum). Some didn't surprise me due to some certain grocery items only coming in plastic wraps/containers, but I will start getting more loose items like veggies, fruits, and bring my own reusable fruit bags to keep them clean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Amanda Zaino 7/26/2022 6:55 AMIt is quite true that we are guaranteed to have control over our own actions more than the collective community. However, especially to our own peers within our team, we have the ability to influence and lead by example when it comes to using reusable dishes. By continuing to respect others around you and politely encouraging eco-friendly choices, others will be sure to follow if you show how easy and accessible it is to make the switch! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Amanda Zaino 7/25/2022 1:44 PMAfter reading about the harmful side affects of aluminum deodorants, I'm very glad I made the switch to aluminum-free deodorant. Some of the side effects mentioned included itchiness, tingling of the skin, and I do remember experiencing those before I made the switch. Accumulation of aluminum being absorbed in your skin from deodorant is just bad in general, so I do recommend everyone to also make that switch if they haven't already. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Amanda Zaino 7/23/2022 8:26 AMThere has been a shift, I noticed that there's now a larger market for re-usable straws starting to make their way onto shelves of local stores, while single-use straws are being pushed back and having a decrease in use! People are starting to understand that single-use products are just going to add to the never-ending waste in our environment, and even if it's a small action, collectively it can make a big difference! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Amanda Zaino 7/19/2022 12:41 PMLandfills in this area are located along the outskirts of Hillsborough County. Personally, the closest one from where I live is around a 30 minute drive. I noticed when looking up the landfill on the map, there's an entire suburban neighborhood right across the street, so I would presume that area would be the most affected by the landfill being directly across from them. There's many medical risks such as asthma, skin irritation, or even water supply contamination. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Amanda Zaino 7/19/2022 12:32 PMThere are a lot of benefits of having clothes made from natural fibers. If these materials ended up in our landfill they would be able to slowly decompose back into the Earth, while unnatural materials like synthetic fibers could potentially take hundreds of years to decompose. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Amanda Zaino 7/18/2022 4:53 PMSince I'm reducing my spending to buy only what I need, I notice that then I'm able to care more about my health by reallocating that money for more important long-term items, especially items that aren't single-use and are eco-friendly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Amanda Zaino 7/18/2022 4:46 PMSome other harmful single-use items include plastic bottles (especially if left in the heat for a long time), grocery plastic bags, and six-pack plastic rings.
