This is the easiest way to reduce plastic consumption. The hard part is remembering to grab the bags from your trunk.

Food Cook a Plastic Free Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I'm realizing that it's next to impossible to cook a meal with zero single use plastic unless you grow the food yourself or buy directly from a farmer. Even if you buy some fresh veggies at the grocery store and skip the plastic bags in the produce section and at the cash register, it still probably came to the store in a big plastic bag. And the trucker that brought it there surely ate some chips or some slim jims. It's all connected, man.... It's all connected!

I use reusable shopping bags regularly.  I challenged myself to ditch single use bags completely this month.  I was about 94% on target.  II faltered a few times and found myself loading items into the basket and placing them into the car, nilly-willy style. Canned goods really roll around on the floor boards of the car....a lot.  The few times I forgot my bags only fueled me to do better about remembering my bags in the first place.

    Food Advocate for Office Reusables
What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

Most employers keep the bottom line in the forefront of their daily operational activities.  Reusable dishes in the work place can help reduce overhead by minimizing the cost of single use utensils and dishes on a reoccurring basis.

    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

I didn't travel anywhere in July, but this is normally what we do anyway. It's easy to do and usually ends up being healthier than the alternative because the snacks aren't full of salt and grease like your typical gas station junk food.

    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

It's the eating out that really adds up. We try to get takeout from places that use minimal packaging (i.e. wrapping a sandwich in paper rather than in styrofoam box which is also nice because it doesn't get as soggy). I knew I would score better than most Americans, but I was surprised by how little plastics are used on average in India. Something to aim for.

    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I look at my action of picking up beyond my property fence as a duty to my neighborhood and as an example.  I have been approached by neighbors that have thanked me for picking up trash, saying that they need to do the same.  Lead by example and the connection is stronger.

Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

I believe the market has created the illusion of  need for disposals and the consumers have responded.  Steel razors do not take more time from your day nor do they cost more.  There are several companies that will mail razors to your door on a schedule for about the same cost as disposables.  Marketing is powerful.
