Food Cook a Plastic Free Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

One of the ways that I'm trying to reduce my plastic waste is skipping the plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables. I have some  thin mesh bags that I use and I've been buying different kinds of  food and shopping at different stores to eliminate plastic on my fruits and vegetables.  I may try the year-round farmers' market too. I've been buying in glass when available and reusing the glass jars. I used the plastic bowls from takeout as molds  for stepping stones for my yard; at least they had another use instead of a single one. I'd love to hear how others are eliminating plastic!

    Community Say No to Styrofoam
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

I've been paying attention to this since I read the question above. I live downtown in Wichita and many of my neighbors are poor. I see many of them using styrofoam containers, especially for drinks, because the food waste is  less. They can also refill a drink and use the same ice. Many places have replaced styrofoam food containers with boxes or bags but those still create single-use waste.  It is definitely something that I will think about going forward.

I've found that even when I think I have nothing to eat, I can make a meal out of fruits and veggies, I don't need a plastic bag, I can just wash them and put them together in my lunch bag and cut them up at work and have a fruit bowl. I love it.

That's a great idea! It has been so hot that I bet a fruit bowl is refreshing!

A few days to go! We're doing great, Team Caecilian!

What changes have you made this month that you think will carry forward?
I plan to continue swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruits and veggies. It has not been as expensive as I thought it would be!

I found a really cool video about making and using reusable paper towels made from flannel! Check it out! https://www.tiktok.com/@crueltyfreestitchery/video/7107031143765019946?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc

I failed this weekend at purchasing only what I need. School supply season is like Christmas for me! While I do not need another box of pens, I did add them to my cart. This challenge  is  a good  reminder that I don't need extra stuff, even though it is less expensive during this time of year.

Making true change is difficult. Sometimes I find myself accepting a plastic straw or ordering from a place I know uses styrofoam because that's easier.  Recently, I asked for no straw and then had two in my bag.
I struggle with the convenience of the drive-through.  I know it is better for me and for the environment to get out of  my car and go in, but it is easier to stay in my car.  Plus, I still worry about Covid.  I'm trying to do my small part to make a big difference.
Cheers to all  of us who are trying! Go Team Caecilian!

Prepackaged snack are usually full of preservatives, which are not great for us. The single serving packaging is convenient but creates a ton of waste over time.

I have networked with people in my neighborhood to trade herbs and vegetables in our gardens! This helps save everyone money while food prices continue to go up and strengthens friendships with neighbors!
