Amy's actions
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Personal Care
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Say no to k-cups
K-cups are NOT biodegradable! I use reusable pods and coffee filters, and use my coffee grounds for compost!
Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.

Amy Becker 7/28/2022 2:14 PMPicked some tomatoes, lettuce and bell peppers from my garden for an eco friendly dinner tonight! -
Amy Becker 7/27/2022 12:19 PMPet and eco friendly natural weed killer: 1 gallon white vinegar, 1 cup salt, 1 tablespoon liquid dishMix and put in reusable spray bottle! -
Amy Becker 7/26/2022 5:26 PMFood waste contaminates whole loads of recyclable material, rendering them useless and fast-tracking them to landfills. In the U.S., food waste contaminates 25% of the recycling that is collected! Your recycling should be clean enough to reuse when it goes in the bin!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Use Reusables at WorkIt is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?
Amy Becker 7/26/2022 2:59 PMCarry your own containers for take-out food and leftovers. Request takeout places use your container instead of their disposable one
-
Gabriel Ochoa 7/31/2022 7:32 AMThanks for the idea. I just assumed they would worry about contamination, so I never considered bringing my own containers. -
Zachery Calle 7/27/2022 9:33 AMBYOC - Bring your own containers! It's only a matter of making it a habit. Once everyone is used to bringing containers in their bags or cars, it will become more normalized!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Reusable Food StorageHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Amy Becker 7/26/2022 2:06 PMWhen I get something that has styrofoam I reuse the styrofoam as filler in my outdoor planters, I use less dirt and they are lighter to move around. I reuse them every year.-
Lielle Berman 7/26/2022 2:07 PMGreat tip, Amy!
