Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Better GumWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Matt Cacace 7/31/2022 7:36 PMI chew gum because it's something mindless that I can do. Instead, I can chew on things like sunflower seeds that don't harm the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Matt Cacace 7/25/2022 6:37 AMThe acceleration of global warming is what concerns me the most. I think we need to continue to regulate how companies produce their goods and make sure that they are doing it in a way that minimizes their negative effects on the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Learn about Environmental JusticeWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Matt Cacace 7/25/2022 6:35 AMWe learned that underserved or marginalized communities tend to be treated unfairly when it comes to things like hazardous waste or how the land is used. It made us upset because the people in these communities aren't being treated fairly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Fill a Water BottleUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Matt Cacace 7/25/2022 6:31 AMI could share these links on social media and with friends and family to spread more awareness about these bottling practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Say No to StyrofoamHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Matt Cacace 7/25/2022 6:29 AMStyrofoam could be an environmental justice issue if more styrofoam is used in poorer communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Become a Recycling ProWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Matt Cacace 7/25/2022 6:26 AMI've learned that only some plastic is accepted by local haulers for recycling. The most difficult part of recycling for me is remembering to check if what I'm about to recycle can actually be recycled or not. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Reusable Food StorageHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Matt Cacace 7/20/2022 11:45 AMTo reduce the amount of plastic containers you use, you can buy glass containers that are microwave safe so that you can meal prep and then heat up the containers that you already store the food in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Estimate My Plastic ConsumptionWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Matt Cacace 7/20/2022 11:43 AMI found out that I don't use as much plastic as I expected. I thought that I would have used more than what was calculated, but I've been trying to limit my plastic consumption so it isn't too surprising. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Matt Cacace 7/20/2022 11:41 AMAfter reading about the toxic side effects, I can think of a few times I've been affected by aluminum deodorant. There have been times where my skin gets itchy or irritated after applying deodorant, so I don't use aluminum deodorant anymore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal Care Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Matt Cacace 7/20/2022 11:40 AMYou can express your personality through art, whether it's through tattoos or more conventional methods. Painting and drawing are great ways to express yourself, while tattoos allow everyone to see your creativity.
