  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Jane Cirigliano's avatar
    Jane Cirigliano 7/31/2022 8:09 AM
Most are located near major highways. Lower income families seem to be most affected. I learned that the majority of waste tracked by the EPA in my area is lead paint, wastewater and underground (septic).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Jane Cirigliano 7/31/2022 8:00 AM
Bringing my own utensils to places I know use disposables shows them that sustainability matters to me. Other customers see it and ask where I got my reusables, and some businesses are starting to ask if you want plastic utensils with your meal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Eco Deodorant
Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

    Jane Cirigliano 7/22/2022 8:29 PM
Thankfully, I have never used any aluminum deodorants, so I have never experienced negative side effects. I do have allergic reactions to a lot of scented products, and I’m hoping I’m ok with the plastic-free deodorant I ordered to try.

We just rescued a 4-year-old black kitty, and he is settling in wonderfully! He is so well-behaved, we can’t believe anyone would ever give him up. He loves looking out his windows, playing with his recycled toys, and he’s learning that treats are tasty!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use a Reusable Mug
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

    Jane Cirigliano 7/16/2022 4:23 PM
I have gotten more into the habit of making my own coffee at home in a travel mug rather than buying coffee. I do miss the Starbucks experience, but it is definitely cheaper!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusables at Work
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Jane Cirigliano 7/16/2022 4:20 PM
When others see me using reusables, it reminds them that they can be doing the same. I’ve had family ask me where I got some of my reusables, and there are some great options in the Zoo gift shop!

    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I have found great deals on items that are new with tags from ThredUP. It’s a wonderful source for recycling my used clothes, and to upcycle other people’s unwanted clothes.

    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

My biggest area of plastic consumption this year has been in groceries / packaging. I would love to find more plastic neutral packaging options!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Skip Plastic Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

The biggest challenge is finding places that deliver groceries and don’t use plastic bags. Other than Instacart, I don’t shop much! I found some cute shopping bags with polar bears on them so I can share a conservation message while I shop!
