Happy last day of the challenge, but some new habits have been formed that will continue on for the rest of my life!  To name a few, no more plastic eating utensils, looking for the best eco-friendly packaging when shopping for groceries, and refusing anything in styrofoam when I can - still not sure what to do about the meats in the meat trays when I am in a store that does not have an in-house butcher.  Working on pre-planning my shopping a little better.  Thank you for sharing this challenge - I have enjoyed learning from others!

It was really hot after our Pirate Ship cruise today and my water in my refillable bottle was gone.  Nothing sounded better than a nice ice cold fountain drink.  And then I noticed the cups were styrofoam.  I was strong enough to say no to the styrofoam and just waited until I got home for an ice cold drink.  Yay me!

My conversations must be centering around the 3 Rs and taking care of our environment.  One conversation was with a gift shop manager about her goal of making her shop more eco-friendly - I love it!  Another conversation centered around the amount of trash on South Padre Island - oh my, we have lots work to do.  And finally, my 9 year old granddaughter found a plastic bag floating in the bay during our boating adventure this morning and exclaimed, "Gramma, there's a piece of trash for your collecting!"  So she grabbed the net and retrieved it.

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

So, we traveled on Tuesday by plane with my 9 year old granddaughter.  I packed sandwiches and snacks in reusable containers, and brought our refillable water bottles.  That was the easy part.  Then in the airport, she didn't like the bread I used for the sandwiches, so Papa took her to get food and snacks and drinks at the airport stores.  So... I would say it was easy to plan and prepare, but difficult to follow through.  We will do better next time!

As we wind down this month, I have loved taking part in this challenge.  I have learned so much from the information on my research as well as others' posts, but I have to say the most important take-away from this challenge is my mindfulness to my choices now.  I am always thinking about the least plastic choice I can make for all my purchases.  I am so aware of the plastic that is EVERYWHERE and it concerns me that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fishes.  (by weight)  And bonus, my hubby has also caught on to some of my changes!

Leaving in a jet plane today down to South Padre Island!  Taking suggestions from others on this team, I am packing our own snacks and lunch in reusable containers and have our water bottles ready to go.  Mindful flying.

I just looked at and read the "50 ways to Use Less Plastic" poster that Claudia had posted.  Excellent suggestions and information.  The points mentioned on the "whys" are alarming.   I think I will use these as "knowing my why" as I begin conversations about what to do.  Thanks Claudia.

    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

Scary.  It is the groceries and home and living that is taking it's toll on me.  I think I am pretty average for a two person household.  Groceries and home and living are our basic needs... so we have a lot of work to do.  I KNOW my grocery cart it filled with plastic (the little amount of groceries we purchase).  It disgusts me.  I am making conscious decisions, non-plastic when available, but honestly, most most most of the time, plastic is the only offering.  I will keep plugging away.

Celebrated grandson's 3rd birthday today.  Hubby chose Fischer Price Toy for present.  I know... it is plastic.  But I did sway him away from the school bus and the fire truck - scored a recycling truck!  Once again, thinking toward a healthier environment and teaching recycling to a 3 year old.

Getting my haircut, I was looking around at all of the hair products and the PLASTIC!  This led to a great discussion with my hairdresser about if she had heard if hair product companies were considering other types of containers for products.  She said that it hasn't happened yet (at least with the products that her salon purchases...the main ones), but it is definitely being talked about with many of her clients.  She is all for it and she said that she doesn't know why the companies changed from the large containers they used to use to refill their own products, but it would be awesome if they could refill their own bottles AND clients' bottles and so forth.  Another great conversation.

WOW I had the exact conversation with my stylist on the island back at the beginning of July!
