    Lifestyle Natural Fibers
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/31/2022 7:08 AM
I know a lot of people can have allergic reaction to the synthetic fibers that are put into clothing- One might be less likely to have the same reaction to something that is 100% natural. Additionally, they cause less of an impact on the environment due to not only being renewable, but often being biodegradable.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/30/2022 7:04 AM
I think the implementation of stories on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have helped me out quite a bit! There are accounts dedicated to educating people on different topics, and often if I learn something new, or they post something I am passionate about, I will share their information to my own story so I can spread the word!

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/29/2022 6:48 AM
Perhaps giving clothes a new life could be a new way to start by cutting back on buying more clothes, and you might get a new hobby in the process! A long sleeve shirt could become your new favorite tank top with just a few wikihow read throughs!

    Community Share My Actions
Have you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/28/2022 10:41 AM
I have noticed slight changes- I think that my immediate family is more conscious of their actions now that I have made intentional efforts to change my own habits! For example, if I go out to dinner with my family, they have started making the effort to skip the straw! I think even just these tiny actions can spread from person to person.

    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar

It was very easy! I am on vacation right now (guess where….) and typically, I pack those 100 calorie snacks to bring that are usually prepackaged. This time around, I brought a large bag of goldfish, and packed them into a small container everyday. Not only was the container more spill-proof in my bag, but I think was producing less trash! It took up no more room in my backpack than those little bags would have.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/23/2022 6:45 AM
The most common place I see single use utensils being used are places that are essentially quick service restaurants and cafeterias, which I imagine is due to the fact that these sort of facilities service so many people. I think pointing out the long-term effects on the environment to the proper people within the establishment you're concerned about is a good start. Additionally, practicing what you preach! A month or so ago I found this nice reusable utensil set at Old Navy of all places- all of the utensils are made from ocean-bound plastics that were collected from coastal communities where no proper recycling practices are in place. It comes in a really cute container, and is small enough to fit in most small bags. I've gotten a lot of compliments on them because.. like I said.. they're cute! But it has also sent several people in the direction of investing in their own travel sized reusable utencils.

I had the opportunity to participate in a Camden City cleanup today! It was really nice to see different organizations within the community come together to cleanup our surrounding areas. It made me really happy to see so many people come out to support a great cause! :-)

    Food Choose Reusable Food Storage
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/19/2022 10:02 AM
I am going to give Liz a big shoutout here, because my answer is rooted in an idea she had. I think a really cool way that she thought outside the box with disposable products like 2 liter soda bottles and water jugs is to turn them into planters! She created a few for our Party for the Planet table, and they were a hit! She cut the tops off and essentially reused the top as the water basin for the planter, and drilled holes and fed string through the remainder of the bottom for "roots" to drink water from the basin. You could also use larger plastic jugs as watering pots, or old peanut butter jars to store snacks on the go!

    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Alexis DeRose's avatar
    Alexis DeRose 7/15/2022 7:18 AM
I learned that while I am making the effort to cut back on plastic, my impact is still relatively large. I feel it is easiest to think of plastic use when it comes to things like food, bottles, etc but my mind doesn't connect plastic as easily to things like makeup, decorations for your home, etc. So, when I got my score it was higher than what I expected. But... Now those things ARE in my mind, and I can be more conscious of my consuming there as well :-)
