Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusables at Work
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

I've been trying to be more mindful of my plastic use at work events by bringing my own reusables to team meetings.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Fill a Water Bottle
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

I have no problem speaking truth about the selling out of precious Florida's springs and I will not purchase Zephyr Hills Spring water for instance. I advocate by sharing the knowledge freely to anyone who will listen.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

Packaging is immense. I've found shopping at the vegetable stand to be the best way to avoid excess packaging but I'm also trapped in the convenience cycle.  It is a pain having to cook/prepare lunches.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Our ambassadors are sharing reusables as part of our message in Manatee Conservation Station and it's very exciting to be able to offer a concrete conservation ask to young guests that has a have a direct impact on the reduction of marine debris!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Go Strawless
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

Yes, but there are still a lot of straws being distributed in Plant City. What I do notice is they don't automatically put them in your cup and do not act like its horrible that you return it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use a Reusable Mug
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

I kept my own cup with me and used it to refill from water stations at the hotel. That didn't particularly seem novel but drinking water from stations without using the plastic cups was a joy. The best way I saw to make it a long term habit is to drink only water or tea- something they bring around in a pitcher or at stations or even hot tea they sell really by the bag.

Going on a mini vacation was more difficult but I've managed to keep pace even when eating at restaurants and using a dinette in the room instead of grabbing snacks. Biggest challenge? Drinks at the beach.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Plastic Free Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I challenged myself to cook with whole foods this month. Packaged food is less healthy (with the exception of berries). I hope to continue using whole foods and switching out foods in single use plastic containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets Homemade Pet Treats
How could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?

Still giving just carrots but I will learn a recipe this week!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Skip Plastic Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

I am excited that ZooTampa is going bag free for July! Retail didn't offer me a bag today when I purchased a gift for my daughter. It is easier when we are part of a team effort to be more aware of single use plastics.
