Food Cook a Plastic Free Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I found this challenge to be harder than I expected, especially for produce.  It made me realize just how many plastic vegetable bags I actually use (even though I do re-purpose them).  I searched online and found a couple of patterns to crochet my own produce bags . . . my next project!

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

Packing our own snacks and lunches for our road trip not only saved us money not buying snacks - it saved us time and fuel by being able to bypass some towns we would have stopped in.  With the rising price of gas, this saved money too!  Plus, we found some lovely little rest areas to stop and eat.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I was pleased my consumption was much less than average Americans, closer in line to Europeans.  There is definitely room for improvement, and answering the questionnaire helped to identify where I could make better decisions.

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

When I can’t avoid disposables, I challenge myself to find a way to use them more than once. I re-purpose a lot in my art studio. I make stencils and mark-making tools, use as a palette or to mix paint or glue, cut up for collage…just to name a few.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I have a litter picker and bucket that I take along on walks in our neighbourhood and I think keeping an eye out for litter has helped me be more observant and truly ‘see’ my surroundings.  It’s quite a pretty area, and I feel good about helping to keep it clean.  It’s also been a bit of an ice-breaker . . . when passing folks, they sometimes thank me or comment on the litter I’ve gathered - so it’s helped me to meet some neighbours and feel more connected to my community.

What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

Refilling travel sized containers is both economical and eco-friendly. We do more traveling by car than by air, but in both cases I appreciate the space I save with small containers - in my luggage AND in sharing hotel bathrooms!
