    Personal Care A Sustainable Flow
Disposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?

    Ronni Hatcher 7/29/2022 5:00 PM
I can already tell these will last many years especially with proper wash care which is a plus personal and economically. I had been wanting to switch for years and years before now, but life always got in the way somehow. So glad I had the challenge this year to remind and spur me on. 👍
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family Thoughtful Toys
Does your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/29/2022 4:57 PM
I don't have a child but my niece did not act too differently to the toys except she liked to smell the natural made toys a lot. I guess they had a better smell.

    Community Share My Actions
Have you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/29/2022 4:55 PM
A month is awhile but its not long enough to see a difference in my community. I would like to see that actions have created a domino effect I just can't see that effects so soon.

What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/29/2022 4:53 PM
The whole subject of bio plastic was new to me, but everything I found said its not recyclable. Not just where I live, but anywhere. Did I not find the right info?

    • Krystina Jarvis's avatar
      Krystina Jarvis 7/29/2022 5:53 PM
Nope, that's actually correct! Proper bioplastic disposal is typically an industrial composting facility that specifically accepts bioplastics.

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/29/2022 4:51 PM
Disposable is such a waste its like using resources making a cermaic plate using it once then smashing it every time you eat. That's how I see it; a container is made for the purpose of just being thrown away, but there really is no away. We turned the place we live into one big trashcan instead for convenience. Instead I will up my skills of creativity and cooking so I am never again tempted to buy prepared food unless it absolutely can not be avoided. After all if my mother is having a low sugar moment then you bet I am gonna have a candy or item with me to give her to eat. 😲 oh writing that last sentence gave me a great out of the box idea. I could always make a small item to put in a small container to take with me of something homemade just in case and if I don't have to give it to my mother or even a stranger who may have diabetes or so on and need something to eat then I get to eat it myself at the end of the day! Score! Now off to find a recipe for such an item you don't necessarily have to refrigerate all day at least. ✋✌ yay for creativity!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Plastic Free Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/29/2022 4:39 PM
I actually have no single use items. I did away with that years ago close to a decade ago actually and even then I didn't have but two items I just never gravitated toward such types of items even before I was aware of plastic pollution etc. I instead had my family members do an inventory for this challenge of there kitchen and I helped. Opened a few eyes and a few eye rolls, but they have done well. My mother no loner uses cling film now. 👍

I have had fun exploring all I did know and review of what I did not know, but also learning how others have done for this challenge. All the shares of new companies I didn't previously know about was great also as I now have more options if something else I try or tried didn't work for me. All of that and more was encouraging; I appreciate that. My biggest challenge was being more active with my family then I normally do on this topic. They were more receptive this month which was great! All in all its been both a challenge and fun to test myself and share what I and others have been up to. Thanks👏😊👍💚

    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/24/2022 11:58 AM
It actually made travel more stream lined. I didn't have to find or ask anyone for silver wear or wait for a food menu, and various other little things that I hadn't realized added up to time waste. I just ate when I got hungry and was able to whip out my food without wait if I didn't want to and so on.

    Community Say No to Styrofoam
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

    Ronni Hatcher's avatar
    Ronni Hatcher 7/24/2022 11:54 AM
I honestly myself haven't given it much thought on how those two might be connected to Styrofoam, but I will have something to reflect on further. I know what others have said, but what does my mind and observations say. Mmm I will think more on that.

Here is how I actively see and approach things of life like waste: Recycling is a limited option so I stick with reduce side of things first and at times only. I consume less first and fore most, but we each do as we can. No efforts in the right direction is wasted especially if we learn then grow from it.👍💚

Personally even my chart would be different from this one. I think we all need to take time out to rethink waste. I have made my own chart long ago that grows/changes over the years with me if necessary. Which is not this one above, but this one comes close to my own, but mine is a bit more personal to me for instance I make a lot of my own clothes using upcycled or deadstock material instead of buying clothes because what I like isnt really made anymore or is so cheap material I can't even stand to touch it. So that factors into my waste chart being different than other examples i can find elsewhere. I think we need ones also tailored to our selves too and the general everybody ones like the example above. Here's another example but I personally would switch these around a little for me personally too.
For me the make one would be above use what you have instead because make is a bigger part of my life. What would your more personal chart consist of?
