    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

Suprisingly, I do not generate much plastic in my life. Since I hardly buy anything, have minimal cosmetic needs, and hardly buy takeout are reasons for my low plastic footprint. I am helping fight plastic pollution by donating some money towards RePurpose's mission!

    Lifestyle Natural Fibers
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    James Jeon's avatar
    James Jeon 7/25/2022 1:38 PM
Natural fibers reduce small particles of plastic found in material such as nylon and polyester from being released into the environment. I also like the way natural fibers feel compared to plastic substitutes. Plastic fibers has it advantages and uses for special occasions but for everyday life and clothes, I choose to wear natural fibers as much as possible.

Lifestyle Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

I went shopping this weekend for running shoes. I did some research online to buy the most sustainable one and found that most companies are addressing their environmental impact. It seems like all companies are doing something about it which made it hard to choose one. I also realized that company that markets themselves as the most sustainable or the one that comes up in research, comes with a hefty price tag.

I did not end up buying any shoes because I realized I already have a pair that seems to be working great. Instead, I will wait until I feel I really need a pair since I have not been running for a few months now. Researching which company to buy on depending on their climate and social efforts made it seem easier to choose a company but also harder since most companies claims to do something about it.

In the end, I feel like most companies are making an effort about sustainability. To try to pick sustainably, I will buy something that's available in store and in front of me so that I don't have to spend more time and gas/resources, regard it's quality, and prefer a smaller company one that does not spend much of their resources on sponsors and advertisement.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

I noticed that certain single use item packaging is more wasteful than others. For example, a handheld bottled water or sport drink is used within the day compared to a laundry detergent bottle which may take weeks or months to use. Businesses, state officials, and people should be more aware of the different types of single use packaging and that they should focus on preventing products such as bottled water that are used only once.  My roommate wanted Gatorade so I bought her the dehydrated powder form that makes up to two gallons instead of purchasing buying individually bottled liquid drinks.

I take actions against plastic pollution because people, animals and plants, and our planet are negatively affected by it. Actions like refusing single use plastics is statement that we care for others and for our planet. However, simply saying no to plastic does not resolve the issue. Instead we must focus on educating people of all societies, provide better alternatives to plastics options such as compostables and reusables and available to all, and influence others to waste less and live a more environmentally friendly life! Happy Plastic Free July everyone!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Honestly, I feel like throwing out facts and how single use plastic pollutes the Earth is not the right way to convince others that they must change. Everyone's background is different on the subject of environmental stewardship and asking a business owner to limit their plastic use can affect their business. I feel like the best way to limit disposables is to urge our politicians to pass laws on restrictions but also, be able to make reusable or more biodegradable single use packaging an affordable option.
