  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets All Natural Pet Toys
In what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?

While I LOVE to give my pets cute stuffed toys, and they love them too, I get so tired of all the stuffing going everywhere, having to look out for the squeakers, and worrying about the puppy trying to eat all of it.  After this last round of stuffed toys, we switched to bones filled with peanut butter and marrow, as well as antler chews, not only are they good for my pups' teeth there is far less mess, and I don't have to worry about any possible issues with ingesting any of it.  Plus, it keeps them entertained for hours!!

    Personal Care A Sustainable Flow
Disposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/10/2022 10:54 AM
Before my recent move I made the switch to a menstrual cup, not only was it more economical, and it worked better for the long and active hours that I was putting in at work.  While moving I had falling away from using it and gone back to pads (easier to work with on the road and using public facilities).  Now that I am settled I am so excited to be going back to one! Not only will it save me a lot, sanitary products are expensive, but I find that I stay a lot healthier down there when I don't use disposables.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/10/2022 10:49 AM
One major benefit about using bar soaps or refilling containers is cutting down on clutter and maximizing space.  For someone that is sharing a pretty small space, this is huge.  Not only is it easier to pack up when ready to move, but it also keeps things organized and tidy when in one place for a while.  And if you are traveling and using shared spaces like a hostel of campground, you don't have to take as much with you into the showers! I can definitely keep with this, and once my current hair care products are used up, I will be making the switch to bars for them too!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family Glass Bottle Baby
How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself and your family? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/10/2022 10:46 AM
While encouraging my friends and family to ditch plastic bottles is great, I know I can reach a larger audience.  Most of my inner circle is pretty waste conscious because of my career focus, but using the same social media platforms that influencers use to convince us to purchase new things, I can encourage a much larger community to make conscious purchases, like avoiding items that are contained in plastic bottles, or use far too much plastic packaging when shipping.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Complete a Waste Audit
What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/10/2022 10:42 AM
I learned that I tend to buy a lot of fresh food that is prepackaged in plastic.  By making the decision to purchase produce that does not have a wrapping and avoiding placing them in plastic produce bags, I not only buy less at one time, but the amount of waste has gone down as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/10/2022 10:31 AM
Packing my own snacks for a trip was not difficult at all, and it allowed me to make healthier choices.  While this was a short trip, I feel like it is definitely a decision I can continue to make on journeys to come.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Lifestyle Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/01/2022 6:01 PM
Buying only what I need helps with my budget but also my waistline.  It keeps me from buying a bunch of junk, which is often in a bunch of plastic packaging anyway.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusables at Work
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/01/2022 6:00 PM
Bringing our own containers helps cut down on the amount of trash at work, and helps keep clutter down at home with plastic containers being held onto.  We use glass and stainless steel containers and absolutely love them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Go Strawless
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/01/2022 5:59 PM
I have noticed a larger group of restaurants asking if a straw is wanted instead of just giving them right away.  A lot of places that just give the straws toss them in the trash even if unopened because they were on the table.  Asking before placing them on the table helps save a straw more than me just not using the one given.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Sara Jobsky's avatar
    Sara Jobsky 7/01/2022 5:57 PM
My husband and I found several reusable utensils that were made out of biodegradable material, as well as bamboo utensils to use when out or at work.  We absolutely love them and it is super easy to keep in a purse or bag with the natural fiber case.
