Thank you for being a part of Team Daz so far! It's been awesome seeing the impact of all our actions! One daily action that I'm focusing on this month is signing petitions to hopefully encourage change on a larger scale. For anyone who wants to join my political advocacy efforts, I highly encourage you to check on these organizations and visit their Get Involved pages: Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Union of Concerned Scientists, EarthDay.org, 350.org, The Nature Conservancy, Environmental Defense Fund, and Earthjustice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Community Write Letters, Emails or Sign Petitions
How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar
    Kaity Knutson 7/10/2022 5:11 PM
It becomes clearer everyday that the "old ways" of protecting the environment aren't working. That's why it's important to support advocacy groups and nonprofits who funding scientific research, political change, and more so that we can look into better solutions on a bigger scale.

How do environmental health, community health, and your family's health intersect?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar
    Kaity Knutson 7/10/2022 5:03 PM
I think that the health of our planet has huge impacts on the health of everything living on it, but to follow up on the sustainable paint topic, there is a paint recycling company in Van Wert that sells paint at the Habitat for Humanity Restore! It may not be low VOC, but you are giving making use of something that would otherwise have to be disposed of as hazardous waste!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Pets All Natural Pet Toys
In what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar

Pet toys are often made out of synthetic materials to make them more durable, but that also means they resist biodegrading once our pets are done with them. Also, by entertaining our pets with things we already have laying around the house (especially if it's already "trash" like bottle caps or toilet paper tubes), we can save a lot of money!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar
    Kaity Knutson 7/07/2022 5:31 AM
Buying used is always more sustainable than buying new because you are saving things from being thrown away while also not adding new products to the consumer stream to be thrown away later. I definitely feel better buying things secondhand, especially if it's something that's still in good shape and I end up using it a lot.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family Thoughtful Toys
Does your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar
    Kaity Knutson 7/04/2022 11:47 AM
I don't have kids currently so I can't quite answer how kids would play with more sustainable toys. But having been a kid with an active imagination, it doesn't take a lot of stuff to keep kids entertained when you let them be creative. Either way, I love all the sustainable toy brands that are coming out and I hope that there will be even more options when I have kids some day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar
    Kaity Knutson 7/04/2022 10:58 AM
It was hard to get an accurate picture of my plastic consumption with the calculator since it seemed to most focus on the amount of stuff you had rather than the amount of plastic stuff you had, which is tricky to navigate for someone like me who has already cut down on a lot of plastic. That being said, I was happy to see that I consume over 69% less than the average American and that my annual trash output would only take 1 day to clean up. But I was surprised to see just how much less plastic the average Indian citizen uses and that they are so exploited for trash clean-up services.

Community Tour A Waste Management Facility
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

    Kaity Knutson's avatar
    Kaity Knutson 7/04/2022 10:49 AM
Our recycling providers and landfill facilities have to work hard to separate our waste and ensure it's being recycled to the best of its ability. Thus, the best way we can help is reducing the amount and variety of the waste we produce to make their jobs easier.
