Debbie's actions
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Food
Compost Food Waste
Compost all vegetable and bread food waste to keep it out of the landfill and to use to improve the soil in my yard. That will mean I will use less commercially made fertilizers for my gardens.
Family
Natural Paints
I will paint rooms in my home with low/no VOC or natural paints.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 120 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 60 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 120 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.

Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.
Community
Write Letters, Emails or Sign Petitions
I will write or sign 1 letters, emails or petitions per day to advocate for plastic-free or planet-friendly policies.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.

Debbie Miller 8/03/2022 8:32 AMI loved this challenge! even though I wasn't able to check in everyday on line - I was actively working at reducing plastics in my life and in those around me as much as possible. This has changed how I shop, how I handle my garbage and how I interact with my enviromment.-

Debbie Miller 7/21/2022 6:25 AMI compost every day! and I've gotten my sisters, parents and my son to participate. They save their scraps for my compost bin =) -
Debbie Miller 7/21/2022 6:24 AMI've been working in my yard and have been composting as much as I can but I've also been re-purposing landscaping rocks and some of the bricks I have. It's been fun to get creative and make something new! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyle Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Debbie Miller 7/21/2022 6:22 AMI found I am doing pretty good at recycling and composting. So most of what goes to landfill is plastic. Is there any other solution for plastic? can it be burned? melted? It's just so heartbreaking to see I'm still adding to the plastics problem. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Go StrawlessHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Debbie Miller 7/21/2022 6:16 AMThis has been a challenge because so many places automatically give you a straw!
-
Debbie Miller 7/21/2022 6:13 AMI have started carrying a bag for trash at all times so I'm ready whenever I see trash! -
Debbie Miller 7/08/2022 1:36 PMI am going to start a waste audit tomorrow to see what am I throwing away. Very excited to see the results. I also saw where you can do a food waste audit - what food are you wasting - that will be next! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Debbie Miller 7/01/2022 1:48 PMIt's hard to get people motivated to take action when things don't effect them directly and in a negative way. I try to express to my family every little effort, step, change makes a difference over time. And just because we aren't suffering doesn't mean we can continue to take our resources for granted. We can't just think that somebody else will fix it so we don't really have to worry.
