  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

My plastic consumption came out to 71 kg/year: 15% lower than the American average, 35% higher than the European average, and 549% higher than the Indian average. My highest category was home and living, which was double my second highest (groceries and cooking).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Natural Fibers
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Mesa Perry's avatar
    Mesa Perry 7/28/2022 7:32 PM
Natural fiber clothing is my favorite choice for hot and humid summers. Despite feeling lightweight, they seem to stand up to wear and washing better than my synthetic clothes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Clean Plate Club
How easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?

Direct-to-consumer brands like Grove and Blueland make switching easy but the cost of refillable/bar/powder dish soap is higher. Before trying it for myself, I was concerned the powder dish soap would be less effective. There was a learning curve with how much to use, but we use it now for all of our hand dishwashing and it works great.

My dogs keep me company when I'm working, provide respite from stressful periods by doing something adorable, and look out for my health by getting me up from the desk every so often to take them on quick walks.

Let’s are wonderful companions. I had my little dog for 21 years before I had to put her down.   I always tried to be environmentally concious in disposing of her waste products  too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Mesa Perry's avatar
    Mesa Perry 7/26/2022 6:50 AM
Out of demand for convenience, more foods are being moved from a single package to single-use portions inside of the larger package. Even though my household has no need for these individually wrapped snacks, grocery store choices can be limited and if we want that food we have to opt for the extra packaging.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Mesa Perry's avatar
    Mesa Perry 7/26/2022 6:44 AM
From growing tomatoes and peppers this year, I've learned to appreciate even more the time and effort it requires to see a small plant through to harvest. And maybe an even bigger lesson is that you can do everything right and still end up with low yield (pests on my tomatoes, I'm looking at you!).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Mesa Perry's avatar
    Mesa Perry 7/22/2022 6:10 AM
Taking older pieces and giving them new life: tie dye, embroidery, bleaching.

Dogs are great for finishing up the watermelon that's been in your fridge for several days...
