Today, I took my rising 9th grader "back to school" shopping. Instead of "fast fashion" we went to Rag-o-Rama, a local consignment shop. It was PERFECT! As a kid that's been in school uniforms from K - 8, this is the first time he has been able to really explore his sense of fashion.

We brought our own bag,  and the lady said, "since you brought your own, we donate the cost of the bag to a local charity" and gave us a wooden chip to deposit into the charity of our choice. My son, an animal lover,  didn't hesitate to put the coin into Paws' slot.

This entire experience felt REALLY GOOD.

And my son has some clothes that he wouldn't have had we gone to a store that sold new clothes/fast fashion.

Now I look forward to going back there to shop for myself, should I need to.

And I feel like I taught my son some lessons, too. On the way home,  he said,  "that's a really cool store." In Teenagese, that is saying a whole lot! #OneHappyMomma

Oh man! Old habits die HARD sometimes. I went to the grocery store today after work and I totally forgot about this. It wasn't until I got home and I was putting my food away and I was mortified! After almost a month of doing REALLY WELL,  I drew a complete BLANK today.

I'm at least grateful for the awareness. And now, my goal is to get as many uses from those bags as I can.

Don't worry, these experiences belong to changing habits. Most important thing is that you have noticed it, you feel bad about it, you have the courage to tell us about it and I guess it will not happen again, Tanya. You are in a process, be patient with yourself.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Tanya Blackwell's avatar

The local waste site is actually VERY near my house, in my community.  I learned that we can take recyclables FOR FREE! I've been in my house for 15 years and I never knew that. I haven't signed up for recycling with my trash service because it's an extra expense. But now I know I have another option.

But to the question,  I live in a predominantly black area. I'm curious to know if there are waste sites this close to residents in other communities.

Though honestly,  I don't think having it in our community impacts us negatively. But it does make me wonder why we have issues with illegal dumping.

I learned a lot... some of what I've learned was super disturbing but mostly,  I'd say this experience has been inspiring and enlightening.  I appreciate the push to think more about how my family's choices impact the environment.

I also have some cool new plastic-free products in my rotation that I didn't before.

This past weekend was TOUGH! My kids and I traveled for our family reunion and I was NOT prepared. Although i had in my mind all the things I was going to do and pack to show that I've got this thing DOWN... well,  yeah.  Let's just say,  I accomplished none of that.  I didn't pack my straws or my water bottles to refill.  I ended up getting some regular bottled water and decided we'd refill those.  But then,  I never found a place to refill them.

I want to integrate this more into my lifestyle such that my day can veer from the normal daily routine and I'm still able to maintain.

I think preparation is the most important part of this.  With preparation comes the ability to pivot when life gets a little hectic.

    Personal Care
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Tanya Blackwell's avatar

I'm very fortunate to live in a city that has a lot of entrepreneurs and pop-up shops. I went to an outdoor "marketplace" today and it was full of handmade products, including clothes. Not only are they handmade,  but they are different than what you'd see at your regular clothing store.  They are almost like wearable art! I think a good way to avoid fast fashion is to support small businesses like these.  While the temptation is to feel like they are SO EXPENSIVE,  the reality is,  if those working in the factories were paid decent wages and worked in acceptable conditions,  we'd see the cost of store bought clothes go way up! In the case of these small businesses,  you're not only paying for the clothes but also supporting the people who make them.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

    Tanya Blackwell's avatar
    Tanya Blackwell 7/14/2022 6:30 PM
I think an effective tool within social media is the use of hashtags. They allow you to not only share your values but also to find others who share them. I can see this as an opportunity to establish a community of like-minded people to then magnify your presence.
Also, people are "followers". Sharing your values on social media could actually inspire others to follow suit.

Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

There were not any links provided with this prompt - but I did my own Google search. After reading through a few links I found, I really liked this one:

    https://celdf.org/water-privatization/

Not only did it do a great job of summarizing the issue in a clear, easy-to-understand way (and provided their sources for additional reference), but it gives me ways that I can contribute.

One thing that I can do to advocate for those who have been harmed by bottling practices is to share what I'm learning with my family and friends.  I have signed up for the CELDF newsletter so that I can get information about how I can get more involved.  I really like the emphasis and focus on the Rights of Nature.

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Tanya Blackwell's avatar
    Tanya Blackwell 7/12/2022 7:26 PM
    IT'S EVERYWHERE!

I also think now with covid,  food items even at restaurants have become more "pre-packaged" than before.  I have seen little cups for ketchup and condiments instead of bigger bottles. At IHOP, they don't even use the syrup jars anymore. The syrup comes in little plastic cups.

My friend sent me a link for "plastic free toilet paper". At first I thought,  "but toilet paper shouldn't have any plastic anyway". Then I realized... IT'S THE PACKAGING!

It seems we use plastic packaging for EVERYTHING! And in some cases,  it's not even the most sensible packaging to use.  It makes me wonder why.
