The ability to track how much trash I pick up, helped me be more aware of how much trash is sitting on the ground.  Some days its a few pieces, other days its over 40!

Yep one day I picked up 84! It was mostly all from one location out by a grocery store stopped to after work there was a field next to the store just wow I had never seen so much trash in one spot . My back was a little tender for a bit, but a lay down with a good book at the end of the day was the only cure I needed.😊
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Myke Garcia 7/22/2022 9:06 AM
When you pick up a piece of trash, you are not only cleaning up our community - you are showing others that even small pieces can add up.  If each member of our community picks up 5 pieces trash, imagine how many pieces that will be all together!

Working hard at picking up trash as I see it on my daily Zoo walks.  Being mindful about my choices has increased since joining the Team too!

Did the same! awesome team! I was surprised to find the same wrapper for a pack of crackers and cheese for three days still sitting there out front by one of the benches so I picked it up this time I was curious so I left it the past two days but couldn't take it anymore so picked it up today. I was shocked a little to see it still there only moved by the wind a little. Plus picked up more around through out the day. There was also way too many cigarette butts again by that same bench. Am I wrong, but I was told I am sure smoking was supposed to be completely off zoo property?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Myke Garcia's avatar
    Myke Garcia 7/09/2022 12:12 PM
We implemented some new housekeeping rules to reduce our waste and inspire our team to waste not!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Whenever I use my bamboo cutlery set, I get compliments.  I could add designs, drawings, or charms to my set to make them more fashionable or statement pieces.  Increasing my viability and giving people who notice an opportunity for us to talk about it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Myke Garcia's avatar
    Myke Garcia 7/09/2022 12:05 PM
Usually, I will place items in nontraditional box, bags, containers.  For instance, potato salad containers can be used to pickle onions and kimchi!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

Mostly complaints about paper straws.  The reaction is that they are inferior to plastic straws.  However; this may be due an individual's frame of reference.  If we examine how straws affect life, not just our life, but life on this planet - this opinion of inferiority will subside.  Plastic straws are inferior - one time use, easy to bend or stop.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

Our home focuses on what we can do in our home to reduce waste.  For us this means using reusable cups, mugs, glasses.  We brew at home and take coffee with us.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

    Myke Garcia 7/09/2022 11:52 AM
Water should be free for everyone.  Don't you think its weird that someone claimed it, stuck it in a bottle, and sells it to us when they themselves did not need to pay for its source?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family
Most of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Myke Garcia's avatar
    Myke Garcia 7/09/2022 11:51 AM
My favorite "R" is REFUSE.  Refuse works well at convenient stores, drive throughs, and retailers.  We can REFUSE items we will not need.  Plastic bags, napkins, straws, plastic ware.  Refuse is so simple and helps keep prices down at our favorite retailers too!
