Jordyn's actions
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.

Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.

Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 45 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.

Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 40 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Family
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Lifestyle
Proper Bioplastic Disposal
I will spend at least 35 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Jordyn Garnett 7/26/2022 6:12 PMReally showed me in perspective how much estimated plastic I use in a year, it made me think about all the other people in the world and then added them together, so I was very surprised as to how the numbers really added up . -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does hosting a watch party help you to get to know your guests, connect them to the cause you are focusing on, and build your community?
Jordyn Garnett 7/26/2022 6:07 PMIt shows them the true impact of pollution and how recycling and reducing plastic use is such a big deal. The media does little to nothing to show the major impacts it’s causing. So a watch party to really inform them of pollution could possibly have them change their ways. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityLandfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?
Jordyn Garnett 7/26/2022 6:06 PMThat there are many ways to eliminate trash, such as it either being recycled, going into landfills, incinerated. The most effective would be everyone recycling so when it goes to a waste management facility they don’t have to pick all of it out or have the possibility of missing lots of plastic that end up in landfills. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 6:52 PMYes, a big example of reusable straws are not the metal ones but the paper straws people and corporations are now starting to use in their drinks. Many people dislike the paper draws as they sort of fall apart in their drinks causing them to want a new straw or plastic ones brought back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodUsing the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 6:51 PMPossibly help them reach their arguments or help their arguments be heard when corporations do not listen, or help the locals with new ways they can drink their water safely. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 6:50 PMMaking sure my cup stays clean, and making sure if I were to bring my cup anywhere to clean before and after getting something to drink with it. I can make it long term as it is a lot more efficient than using one use cups -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 6:23 PMThe benefit o f harming bar soaps or refilling existing containers is it’s a lot cheaper not to mention safer for the environment. I believe I will keep this action in life as it seems cost friendly -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPetsOther species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 6:20 PMTo be more laid back and be wary of those you let into your personal spaces. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 4:57 PMHow dangerous we are with our plastics, we have options to recycle yet most don’t do it or don't realize the community offers recycling pick up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyHow can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?
Jordyn Garnett 7/17/2022 4:56 PMI don’t have kids, but I do have two little half siblings that tend to love art. Ways to get rid of glitter is by giving more variety of colors for them to choose from or using eco friendly glitter also known as “salt glitter”
