Nicole's actions
Food
Use Reusables at Work
I will use reusable dishes and silverware when eating at work.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 20 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Personal Care
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by posting to my social media networks.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Nicole Herbert 7/24/2022 8:22 AMLove the Canadian company Etee (www.shopetee.com) for plastic free body care and their toothpaste (chewpaste) is great, I really wasn't expecting to like it but I do. The also sell plastic free floss which will probably be my next venture as I already use bamboo toothbrushes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Nicole Herbert 7/15/2022 10:11 AMhttps://canadiangeographic.ca/articles/canadas-dirty-secret/
Great article, although a little out of date (2017), but the most information I could find in one place about Canadian landfill stream. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Nicole Herbert 7/03/2022 4:57 PMBy making my own coffee before leaving my house instead of going to a drive thru on the way to work I am still able to save a cup by using my own reusable even when coffee shops are not accepting reusable cups -
