I try to just buy naked produce so today I bought 8 apples. They were rolling all over the place when I tried to weigh them. But, no plastic bag was sacrificed!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

We are on a road trip! The worst environment for plastic reduction. But before we left I packed leftovers in jars I had saved. Tonight for dinner we heated up leftovers instead of going out or doing takeout. Healthier, cheaper, and no plastic.

Great job Kate! SO true… road tripping is always fun, but can be overwhelming when the options on the road are usually plastic filled… so being prepared like that is literally A GOAL!!!

We were already doing a lot of the easy things but it encouraged me to up my game a bit, especially around fast food consumption with all of its plastic and styrofoam. I have increased awareness of just how much plastic surrounds our daily lives - not pretty!

I was shocked as well as to how much plastic is in our lives... I think Covid even added more.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

It is easy for our family as we have been doing this for years. It seems lots of conferences and meetings give out bags as swag so we have accumulated lots of them. The last meeting I went to gave out insulated cooler-style bags! So this is really easy. And now the self-checkout lanes let you say that you have your own bags - that used to be a bit of a hassle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I picked up trash while doing my Sea Turtle foot patrol and found SO MANY plastic straws in front of Wanna Wanna. I will be reaching out to them about this problem!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

The unpackaged peppers at Sprouts are better than the 3-packs elsewhere. Plus you can pick out the best ones.

I found some deodorant at Wal-Mart packaged in aluminum! Smells good, too.

I now have packed eating utensils in the car - and brought my own fork in to Laredo Taco this morning. It's better with metal.
