Maria Watson 7/21/2022 4:26 PMGreat job Kate! SO true… road tripping is always fun, but can be overwhelming when the options on the road are usually plastic filled… so being prepared like that is literally A GOAL!!! -

Kate's actions
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!

Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.

Kate Krause 7/30/2022 1:53 PMI try to just buy naked produce so today I bought 8 apples. They were rolling all over the place when I tried to weigh them. But, no plastic bag was sacrificed!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Kate Krause 7/20/2022 9:36 PMWe are on a road trip! The worst environment for plastic reduction. But before we left I packed leftovers in jars I had saved. Tonight for dinner we heated up leftovers instead of going out or doing takeout. Healthier, cheaper, and no plastic. -
Kate Krause 7/13/2022 7:02 AMWe were already doing a lot of the easy things but it encouraged me to up my game a bit, especially around fast food consumption with all of its plastic and styrofoam. I have increased awareness of just how much plastic surrounds our daily lives - not pretty!-
Amy Daley 7/13/2022 11:20 AMI was shocked as well as to how much plastic is in our lives... I think Covid even added more.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Kate Krause 7/13/2022 6:57 AMIt is easy for our family as we have been doing this for years. It seems lots of conferences and meetings give out bags as swag so we have accumulated lots of them. The last meeting I went to gave out insulated cooler-style bags! So this is really easy. And now the self-checkout lanes let you say that you have your own bags - that used to be a bit of a hassle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kate Krause 7/13/2022 6:52 AMI picked up trash while doing my Sea Turtle foot patrol and found SO MANY plastic straws in front of Wanna Wanna. I will be reaching out to them about this problem! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Kate Krause 7/09/2022 10:17 AMThe unpackaged peppers at Sprouts are better than the 3-packs elsewhere. Plus you can pick out the best ones. -
Kate Krause 7/06/2022 1:17 PMI found some deodorant at Wal-Mart packaged in aluminum! Smells good, too.-
