Marcia's actions
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Family
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 11 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 5 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.

Marcia Lyon 7/23/2022 4:02 PMWhile traveling these past few weeks, it was nice to see that all the airports that we traveled through had refillable water bottle stations. Plus, at the All-Star Event in Santa Monica, they had numerous refillable water stations. In addition, they had separate cans to collect trash, recyclables, and compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Marcia Lyon 7/04/2022 12:10 PMThis one is hard. I cleaned out the bathroom cabinets and found way too many disposable razors in each one!!! I will take me a long time to use them all. (;0( -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Marcia Lyon 7/02/2022 11:27 AMTaking a walk around the community helps with this, but it is also discouraging how much trash there is day after day.-
Kristen M-ski 7/02/2022 3:21 PMI feel that. With summertime tourists in the city, I am forever picking up trash around my park. It sucks, but at least it's less debris getting into our waterways.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Marcia Lyon 7/02/2022 11:04 AMThe best is feeling that I have done another task to help the world, and be an example for others. -
Marcia Lyon 7/01/2022 11:47 AMBusy day, so far so good!
