Kristen M-ski 7/21/2022 12:05 PMRead a 2008 article from psychologists about persuasion when it comes to behavior changes for the environment: https://www.apa.org/monitor/2008/03/planet.html
It discusses how peer pressure and the need to conform socially within your community to others so you aren't the odd one out is one of the most significant motivators they have found. One researcher in the article, Robert Cialdini, PhD, said, "There's an evolutionary explanation for it. The most primitive way we've developed to make decisions is to watch what other people in similar situations are doing."
Following this logic, the more people we can get on board with conservation-minded behaviors, the more it should ripple out to others who feel the need to participate in these social changes. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Kristen M-ski 7/11/2022 9:12 PMBioplastics seem to be greenwashing unsustainable polymers that aren't that much more environmentally friendly as regular plastics, they just involve less digging in the Earth. I dislike these deceitful products being marketed in a way that makes consumer think this is an alternative to plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Kristen M-ski 7/11/2022 9:07 PMI think people feel more comfortable making changes when they see others in their social circles and communities doing it. I have noticed that, even without asking, some family and friends are making strides to do better. Leading by example can be very encouraging to others. -
Kristen M-ski 7/10/2022 6:18 PMJust finished my final for my urban watershed class. It's really made me appreciate how much Baltimore City does to protect the Patapsco River compared to other cities situated on major waterways. We're not perfect, but Baltimore's communities work very hard to be good environmental stewards and people should be proud of this city! -
