Stephanie's actions
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Personal Care
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 8 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 90 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you learn about micro-plastics that surprised you?
Stephanie North 7/30/2022 2:35 PMI think what surprises me the most are companies that purposely use microplastic like toothpaste or facial wash. I also bet you didn't know these microbeads can get embedded in your gums. Another reason to purchase zero waste products. -
Stephanie North 7/29/2022 8:25 AMHow is everyone feeling about achieving their plastic-free goals? I hope those of you new to the challenge feel inspired to continue your actions when the challenge is over. Let's reduce our carbon footprint together. ACHS Rocks! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Stephanie North 7/28/2022 8:15 AMI think many of us still have a NIMBY mentality, and you cannot bury your head to avoid the need for equal protection and meaningful involvement in the equitable distribution of environmental benefits. I am not sure if people are afraid to approach the issue, choose to ignore it, or just don’t want to deal with it. Watching a documentary is a start, but getting out there, finding a community that needs help, and getting involved is where we need to go with this challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Stephanie North 7/28/2022 7:24 AMWith farmer markets open and so many farms-to-table choices, this goal is not difficult to achieve in July. I changed it up a bit. I am making this challenge year-round and prepping for the months ahead. This has included harvesting, canning, and prepping to reduce store-bought packaged items in the winter months. My daughter has been the biggest help to plan ahead.-
Jacqui McGrath 7/29/2022 5:50 AMWow - so cool, Stephanie!!! I'd love to hear how it goes in the coming months. If you haven't read Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, I recommend it for continued inspiration on seasonal eating. Her daughter co-authored the book :) http://barbarakingsolver.net/books/animal-vegetable-miiracle/

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Stephanie North 7/27/2022 8:47 AMI know in most of my reflections, I have mentioned that I have a natural disdain for plastic. This reflection makes me wonder if I am just cheap and lazy. So many reusable eco-friendly bag options are available online and in major stores, so why use plastic? I like my reusable mesh bags because I don't have to keep buying the plastic alternative, and I can just throw them in the hamper when I am done=cheap and lazy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Stephanie North 7/27/2022 8:42 AMThis was not difficult. I do like that stores charge if you don't bring your bags. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I used a plastic bag....at least decades. Again, I am finding that plastic is a nuisance, and it is easier not to use plastic. Maybe once you have gone years avoiding plastic, you realize you have no use for it. It makes food taste funny, it takes up space, it doesn't keep it's integrity, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Stephanie North 7/27/2022 8:33 AMThe only time this was ever a challenge was when my children were little. It's really hard to find travel containers without plastic. My solution was metal bento boxes. The kids thought they were cool, and so did their friends. I was told by a school teacher that my kids started a trend with the bento boxes, and it actually opened the door for plastic awareness at primary school. Fast forward, and now there are so many options. We all still like the bento boxes....because they are cool. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLifestyleWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Stephanie North 7/27/2022 8:23 AMUsing reusable travel containers is more convenient than buying small little bottles. Even before 9/11, I used travel-size containers and kept them filled and ready to go. I use to travel a lot, so I found this convenient. Nowadays, there are so many plastic-free options to choose from, and they last longer than plastic options. I also realized some of my travel containers are pre-9/11. I am clearly all about the reuse of the three r's. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonal CareWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Stephanie North 7/27/2022 8:16 AMI have always used products in sustainable packaging. For this challenge, I even attempted to go through everything I have to find items. 90% of my make-up products are sustainably packaged, and my lifestyle of wearing make-up has changed dramatically with Covid. I discovered I am truly using nothing in plastic. The products themselves are all vegan. This result was good to see. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Stephanie North 7/27/2022 8:06 AMWhen completed the plastic calculator, my results were zero. I am unsure if there was an issue with the calculator because minimal waste still has to be a result. There are times you just can't avoid all plastic waste. I did find it interesting that one question asked about cotton buds (cotton swabs), and I had to laugh. Plastic buds have no integrity, and I have always found them horrible to use, anyway. This challenge has made me realize I really disdain plastic, and not for the obvious reason.
