Mandi's actions
Family
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 20 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Personal Care
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA-approved reusable quart-sized bag.
Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Lifestyle
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Community
Pick up daily trash when walking dog
Pick up trash I find on daily walk with dog and recycle when necessary
Family
2nd hand kids clothes
Almost all my child's clothes are second hand clothes
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Food
Do more research on if there is a bulk food store in area where you bring containers
See if I can get any food I use regularly local without plastic
Food
Avoid k cup for coffee
Avoid using small plastic k cups for daily coffee.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Food
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Community
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Lifestyle
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family
Use reusable swim diaper for baby
While in the water a lot this summer I'm having my daughter use reusable swim diapers as opposed to disposable.
Family
Give my kids toys a second life
Make sure to give my kids toys a second life and donate and acquire toys the same way when possible
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Family
Buy bamboo brush for daughter
Utilize bamboo instead of plastic brush
Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Food
Buy mesh reusable bags
Use these bags to replace plastic fruit bags in store
Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Food
Replace plastic lunch bottle
Refuse to have plastic drink at lunch

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamilyWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Mandi Townzen 7/30/2022 9:46 AMI have been pretty privileged in my life that I haven't really thought about environmental justice or what it is. It was eye opening to read more on it and defintently made me think more about what my price page affords me as far as the environment is concerned. -
Mandi Townzen 7/30/2022 9:30 AMI appreciate companies like life water that even though it is plastic water bottle they use 100 percent recycled plastic for their bottles -
Mandi Townzen 7/28/2022 10:44 AMSo proud of everyone on the team for making so many changes! Love reading everyone's posts and reflection question answers! -

Mandi Townzen 7/26/2022 10:14 AMRemember to clean out your yogurt containers before tossing in recycling bin if you want it to be recycled! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Mandi Townzen 7/26/2022 10:06 AMIt was interesting to learn about some of what is accepted and what's not. Like a yogurt lid by itself will not be but when attached it is able to be recycled. -
Mandi Townzen 7/25/2022 3:30 PMDay 25 let's go! Think of how much our new changes are impacting the earth as a whole! -
Mandi Townzen 7/24/2022 10:47 AMSo proud of my carnivore team for stepping up for plastic free July! -
Mandi Townzen 7/23/2022 11:56 AMI love restaurants that wait until people ask for a straw to hand out vs just putting on table, because even if you weren't going to use, once on table a lot of places usually have to toss anywho
