Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

Every time I do this challenge, I continue to improve my carbon footprint in addition to learning more about the current environmental struggles we face every day.

    Personal Care
Disposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?

I am happy to keep menstrual products out of the landfill and our sewers! I like that the cup is reusable and I will never run out in an emergency.

In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

I couldn't get the map to work from the website, but from what I can gather most of them are outside of Seattle. In general, studies have show that landfills are in "neighborhoods where poor people and people of color live.”

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I already have a pretty good idea of where my plastic waste is coming from (online shopping, home and beauty products). That said, I thought the calculator was somewhat simplistic and believe my plastic footprint is even lower than what the calculation showed. I think we really need to demand that manufacturers use less plastic. I'm not quite ready to buy everything at the bulk store...though if someone has had a good experience with one, let me know!

    Food
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

I always keep my reusable utensils on site at work so I know I have it available. It's been extremely helpful to reduce the need for plastic or compostable forks or spoons!
