Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/29/2022 8:21 AM
I joined the challenge because I wanted to quantify my plastic usage and expand my understanding of how much our daily lives involve plastic and styrofoam; it is a staggering amount.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Say No to Styrofoam
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/27/2022 8:56 AM
Styrofoam is cheap to produce, transport, and serve. It is also difficult to break down and find recycling centers that accept styrofoam. Due to its low cost, low-income areas are easy targets for it's daily use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Cook a Plastic Free Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/27/2022 8:52 AM
Produce brought from the markets is where I tend to use single-use plastics most. I have replaced them with reusable and sustainably sourced produce/fruit bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/25/2022 9:22 AM
There has been a stigma behind the safety of steel razors and the thought of more blades equating to a better shave. But I have learned that not only do steel razors have a better shave and are safe to use, but they are easier to keep clean, more hygienic than disposables, and less irritating on my skin.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/25/2022 9:15 AM
This was a difficult task. Traveling is always a race with the clock. Finding food on the go usually means picking up something to eat at a market or store, and the quickest is usually wrapped in plastic. In the future, planning will entail my itinerary, luggage, to-go meals, and snacks.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/25/2022 9:12 AM
Increased patience. Tending and monitoring my garden helps me realize the effort and resources needed to produce victuals. As well, raising a garden provides resources for the micro-environment in my community, from pollinators to soil microbes to habitat for insects, small mammals, reptiles, and birds; the benefits extend past my table!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Choose Reusable Food Storage
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/21/2022 8:38 AM
Decorating and functionality of storage containers. I tend to choose containers that work for multiple items and function well in the cupboards, counters, and storage spaces.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Skip Plastic Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/21/2022 8:36 AM
The only difficulty in this challenge is to remember to bring them. this is easily averted by having extra reusable bags in my vehicle or backpack, and I like to be creative with the styles of bags too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/21/2022 8:34 AM
While shopping at the grocery stores, I am more mindful of the type of plastic goods are sold in. And when I do have to purchase goods in plastic containers, I tend to buy products with containers that have multiple use ability and/or have labeling/descriptions on the packaging with reminders and how-tos on recycling their packaging.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Use a Reusable Mug
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

    Markus Endter's avatar
    Markus Endter 7/21/2022 8:27 AM
It allowed me to explore other options for beverages. As in teas, drink mixes, or even canned instead of plastic beverages. I know am accustomed to exploring new types of beverages.
