Mary's actions
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community that follows the CDC’s current guidelines for prevention of disease transfer.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Proper Bioplastic Disposal
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Attend an ACHS Webinar
Learn about how plastics are affecting our environment!

Mary Miele 7/27/2022 6:23 PMUsing Ridwell to recycle / reuse plastics. They take clear plastic / plastic film and #1 plastic bottles and clamshells. Have been using this service for a couple months. They also take in clothing to be repurposed, batteries, lightbulbs each pickup, and some other items occasionally, like bike parts, or bread tags / plastic bottle tops, and even diapers (I assume unused!!). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?
Mary Miele 7/25/2022 3:29 PMShelli and I worked this morning to clear out micro plastics from the shoreline at Cannon Beach, with Marc Ward and the SeaTurtlesForever / Blue Wave team.-
Jacqui McGrath 7/25/2022 4:04 PMSo cool! What was the "net" -- pounds??! It's hard to imagine that the ocean is so full of degrading plastics that it's now being strained for the sake of marine life. Meanwhile, I'm at an "eco certified" hotel this week that supplies their guests with single use PET plastic bottled water. The hotel is literally on the beach with a sea turtle project. There are so many dots that need to be connected yet.
